152. Can demons inhabit one’s physical body and adversely affect him/her?
When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an evil spirit came from the tombs to meet him. This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him any more, not even with a chain. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones. (Mark 5:2-5)
(Yes. From mental problems to physical problems of various types, demons can adversely affect people.)
153. Do Christians have the authority/ability to cast demons out of a person?
The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:17-20)
(Yes, but only through God. **Having salvation is something much more important to rejoice about than knowing demons submit to the Christian in Jesus’ name. Can you rejoice over this? Also, Scripture teaches unsaved people can drive out demons too, Acts 19:13-15; Mt. 7:21-23.)
154. Can demon spirits be involved with fortune-tellers (and other occult practices)?
Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. This girl followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.” She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so troubled that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her. When the owners of the slave girl realized that their hope of making money was gone ... (Acts 16:16-19)
(No question at all that they are. Though gaining popularity in our day through Harry Potter materials, all occult involvement is evil and strictly forbidden by God.)
155. Besides an involvement in the occult, do demons also have a role in originating certain false doctrines to the detriment of all who would believe them?
The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. (1 Tim 4:1,2)
(Yes, absolutely. Demons can be religious, as can satan himself! We must be guarded against false doctrines and various deceptions.)
156. Do one’s doctrines influence his behavior?
(Yes. If a Christian was converted to Mormonism, his behavior would change in various ways. He would start to attend a Mormon church and read the Book of Mormon.
Similarly, if one believes the popular but false grace message of our hour—that Rom. 7:14-25 refers to Paul as a Christian and the normal Christian life—then his resistance to yield to sin and hatred of sin will be much lower than needed to be an overcomer.)
157. Do demons know Jesus’ identity?
Whenever the evil spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.” (Mark 3:11)
(Yes and they can also speak through a person! In New Age terms this would be called “channeling.”)
158. Can demons perform miracles?
They are spirits of demons performing miraculous signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty. (Rev 16:14)
(Yes. There are two sources of miracles. That truth is very important to know in our day. See this article for more details http://www.evangelicaloutreach.org/miracles.htm )
159. Is it a close spiritual struggle between the dark forces of evil and God?
The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.” (Mat 8:31)
(No. Thousands of demons grouped together inside one person begged Jesus. They know who has power over them! NOTE: That also occurred before the cross!)
