Bible Quiz 14
(How well do you know the New Testament?)
106. Moses is mentioned hundreds of times in the Bible. Even in the New Testament his name repeatedly appears. In the following passage, what truths can you glean about him?
By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible. (Heb 11:24-27)
[ (1) He had a very powerful and wealthy upbringing, being raised by the Pharaoh’s daughter. (2) He gave up all that and wisely chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time. (3) He knew to identify himself with God’s will would mean disgrace. (4) His value system was very different from the norm because he was looking beyond the grave and thought about his future reward. That led his godly course of action, which blessed millions. (5) He persevered all that trouble, including the king’s anger, because he saw the invisible God.]
107. In the gospels we read of a rich young ruler, who Jesus witnessed to about eternal life, but who afterwards walked away sad and unsaved (Mk. 10:25; Lk. 18:18-25). His great riches were his downfall. Did Moses’ great wealth and high position hinder him from salvation?
(No. He is the opposite of the rich, young ruler who rejected salvation because the cost was too high. Moses knew what true riches were and wisely chose God’s will. He entered God’s paradise kingdom after his death.)
108. What happened to Moses’ body?
But even the archangel Michael, when he was disputing with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to bring a slanderous accusation against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” (Jude 1:9)
And Moses the servant of the LORD died there in Moab, as the LORD had said. He buried him in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is. (Deu 34:5,6)
[For some unknown reason, the devil wanted Moses’ body and disputed with Michael the archangel over it. In the end, God buried him. (Jude 9 is one of the strange verses in the Bible.)]
109. Before Jesus died, Moses and another person appeared to the Lord at the mount of transfiguration. Who was the other person?
About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray. As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. Peter and his companions were very sleepy, but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.) While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and enveloped them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” (Luke 9:28-35)
(Elijah.)
110. What did they talk with Jesus about?
(His departure—another way of referring to his physical death.)
111. Since Jesus spoke with these two Old Testament saints, what does that say about the doctrine of soul sleep, as taught by the Seventh Day Adventists, Jehovah’s Witnesses and others?
(It shows they are wrong because Moses, who died, was not in some unconscious state awaiting the resurrection. Neither was Elijah, but he never died physically.)
112. The Heavenly Father magnified Jesus’ teachings over Moses or Elijah. In what words did he do that?
(“This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” )
113. Was Jesus’ face ever radiant before his death on the cross?
There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. (Mat 17:2)
(Yes.)
114. When Moses was given the 10 Commandments, was his face radiant?
Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, fading though it was, (2 Cor 3:7)
(Yes.)
115. Are there any other examples of people (not angels), whose faces became radiant in appearance?
All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel. (Acts 6:15)
(Yes, Stephen.)
