Is King Saul’s Death

a Bible Contradiction?

Various false religions, which would like all to think the Bible is not accurate, have mentioned King Saul’s death in an effort to supply a contradiction. Needlessly, some people have been confused by the following three references:

The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded him critically. Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised fellows will come and run me through and abuse me.” But his armor-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it. When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died with him. (1 Sam 31:3-5)

“I happened to be on Mount Gilboa,” the young man said, “and there was Saul, leaning on his spear, with the chariots and riders almost upon him. When he turned around and saw me, he called out to me, and I said, ‘What can I do?’”He asked me, ‘Who are you?’ “‘An Amalekite,’ I answered. “Then he said to me, ‘Stand over me and kill me! I am in the throes of death, but I’m still alive.’ So I stood over him and killed him, because I knew that after he had fallen he could not survive. And I took the crown that was on his head and the band on his arm and have brought them here to my lord.” (2 Sam 1:6-10)

When a man told me, “Saul is dead,” and thought he was bringing good news, I seized him and put him to death in Ziklag. That was the reward I gave him for his news! (2 Sam 4:10)

**The KEY to understanding 2 Sam. 1:6-10 is 2 Sam. 4:10. That is where David tells us the young Amalekite thought his lie would be good news to David and he would get a reward for his report. The actual historical account is 1 Sam. 31:3-5 and that becomes apparent with 2 Sam. 4:10. There is no contradiction in those passages.

The Immaculate Conception

The Immaculate Conception is a theological term which does not refer to Jesus being born of a virgin in the slightest way as many have been led to think, but instead the Catholic idea that Mary was born without original sin! Somehow many non-Catholics have been duped about this non-Christian concept. For more info, please see this http://www.evangelicaloutreach.org/immaculatemary.htm (Remember: Jesus was born of a virgin, but the immaculate conception of Mary is not true.)

Mormon (LDS) Apostles

One of the unique and authoritative claims of the Mormon (LDS) church is they have twelve living Apostles similar to what the Lord Jesus had when he walked the face of the earth. No doubt, some people have been misled by that deceptive claim. The Bible tells us how to test such claims:

The things that mark an apostle—signs, wonders and miracles—were done among you with great perseverance. (2 Cor 12:12)

Not only do the so-called Mormon Apostles of our day lack those identifying marks, there are likewise people in other groups who are also exposed as counterfeits by 2 Cor. 12:12. NOTE: False apostles can appear as godly people, but are actually servants of the devil (2 Cor. 11:13-15):

For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.

Another vital truth when evaluating any person who claims to be a Christian and especially a Christian teacher is: Is his plan of salvation the same as what the New Testament teaches? If not, do NOT believe a word he is saying. Such people are false apostles, false prophets, false teachers, etc. and therefore spiritually DANGEROUS! Evaluate them righteously—by Scripture (2 Tim. 3:16,17)— and not by appearance or claims. (See this for more details about the true plan of salvation.)
