Is America

Babylon The Great?

Those of us who live in the United States have often observed the open wickedness and injustices around us. Consequently, some Christians in this country have toyed with the idea that the USA is Babylon The Great. Those who embrace this view have overlooked two glaring problems with that position:

(1) Jesus taught the following about prophets dying in Jerusalem:

In any case, I must keep going today and tomorrow and the next day—for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem! (Luke 13:33)

That truth parallels the following characteristic of Babylon the Great. We read:

In her was found the blood of prophets and of the saints, and of all who have been killed on the earth. (Rev 18:24)

That is clearly not a description of America’s history.

(2) Remember also that the USA was discovered in 1492, which is recent. Before then, God’s prophets were already being slain.

It appears that Jerusalem is Babylon the Great and the city referred to in Rev. 18:10. Another possibility, but less credible, is Rome because of all the Christians who were slain by her during the inquisitions and crusades.

Is It Okay For A Christian

Woman To Wear Pants?

There are various groups, that call themselves holiness, which are repulsed at the idea of a Christian woman wearing pants. In fact, they think the following passage is a condemnation of such:

A woman must not wear men’s clothing, nor a man wear women’s clothing, for the LORD your God detests anyone who does this. (Deu 22:5)

NOTE: It does not say pants in that verse. It says men’s clothing. There is a definite difference between the two. Pants are available for both men and women. It is wrong to say that all pants are men’s apparel, just like it would be wrong to say all robes are men’s apparel. The Bible shows that both men and women wore robes:

When David arrived at the summit, where people used to worship God, Hushai the Arkite was there to meet him, his robe torn and dust on his head. (2 Sam 15:32)

So his servant put her out and bolted the door after her. She was wearing a richly ornamented robe, for this was the kind of garment the virgin daughters of the king wore. (2 Sam 13:18)

Again, that is a similar situation, as we have today, with pants. Women are forbidden from wearing men’s pants, but not women’s pants and vice versa. (Also, all Christian clothing is to be modest.)

Is Jer. 10:1-4 Referring

To a Christmas Tree or an Idol?

Here is the passage in question:

Hear what the LORD says to you, O house of Israel. This is what the LORD says: “Do not learn the ways of the nations or be terrified by signs in the sky, though the nations are terrified by them. For the customs of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel. They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter.” (Jer. 10:1-4)

The way a Christmas tree is decorated has some thinking that passage is referring to such. The context clears up the controversy:

Like a scarecrow in a melon patch, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good.” No one is like you, O LORD; you are great, and your name is mighty in power. Who should not revere you, O King of the nations? This is your due. Among all the wise men of the nations and in all their kingdoms, there is no one like you. They are all senseless and foolish; they are taught by worthless wooden idols. Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish and gold from Uphaz. What the craftsman and goldsmith have made is then dressed in blue and purple—all made by skilled workers. But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King. When he is angry, the earth trembles; the nations cannot endure his wrath. (Jer 10:5-10)

It is man made wooden idols which are contrasted with the true and living God in those ten verses. It is not referring to a Christmas tree, as much as some would like it to be. (This, however, is not an endorsement of a Christmas tree, but merely stating Jer. 10:1-4 is not a condemnation of a Christmas tree.)

Should a Woman
Have Long Hair

and Man Short Hair?

Is hair something Christians should be aware of? If so, what does it say? Here are the facts:

Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God. (1 Cor 11:14-16)
