John 6:37-39
Another Eternal Security Misuse of Scripture

Blind Eternal Security Proponents

It amazes me how eternal security proponents can think they have found solid Scriptural support for their security-in-sin gospel when it doesn’t exist in the Bible anywhere! This, however, is exactly what they think. In particular, one such example of this is from John 6. In verses 37-40, the Lord Jesus taught:

All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

Please note verse 37 says comes and verse 40 says believes. These describe the person who shall not be lost or driven away by Jesus, but shall have eternal life. In other words, it is a continuous coming to Jesus, looking to and believing on Jesus that is described here. John 6:37-40 does not refer to anyone other than such a person. In other words, a person who has had a moment of faith or even several years of faith in Jesus is not referred to here unless he is still coming to Jesus and believing on him (which doesn’t automatically happen because of true regeneration). But this certainly is not the way the once saved always saved advocates refer to this passage, and therefore, misuse it as they do many other passages to their own spiritual destruction and the destruction of others who want their spiritual ears tickled by this license for immorality and doctrine of demons.

Verse 39 reads:

And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me.

To the eternal security proponent this means that a person once saved can afterwards live in a vile, wicked, devilish, and corrupt manner and still never become spiritually lost. Just the way the grace changers cite their proof texts, including this one from John 6, shows what they are trying to prove—one can live in an unholy way and still remain God’s child bound for heaven and cannot ever become lost again.

Sealed By The Holy Spirit

Seemingly such people who think the Bible allows for this, based on John 6:39, have never read through the rest of John’s gospel. For later in Jesus’ ministry, he cited something relevant to this issue and directly related to that verse. Here is John 17:12:

While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.

Judas Iscariot was an exception to the other Twelve disciples who, at that point while Jesus prayed this, had become lost. Though Judas was previously saved he became spiritually lost because of his own sin and not due to any negligence of the Lord Jesus.

It is Biblically possible for a true believer to become an unbeliever, have his faith shipwrecked and/or cease believing, according to the Lord Jesus and his apostles (1 Tim. 1:19,20; 2 Tim. 2:18; Luke 8:13 and Rom. 11:19-23). This is the saving faith of the Bible. Consequently, we must remain guarded and walk carefully or we too will become an apostate like Demas!

Hence, John 6:37-40 doesn’t lend support to the heresy of eternal security and should never be cited as such. GOD BLESS YOU.
