One of the major events in the final few years of this age and during the time of the antichrist is the abomination that causes desolation (ATCD). This major event is mentioned directly five times in the Bible and found in both the Old and New Testaments:
He will confirm a covenant with many for one “seven.” In the middle of the “seven” he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on a wing of the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him. (Dan. 9:27)
His armed forces will rise up to desecrate the temple fortress and will abolish the daily sacrifice. Then they will set up the abomination that causes desolation. (Dan. 11:31)
From the time that the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination that causes desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days. (Dan. 12:11)
So when you see standing in the holy place “the abomination that causes desolation,” spoken of through the prophet Daniel—let the reader understand—then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. (Matt. 24:15,16)
When you see “the abomination that causes desolation” standing where it does not belong—let the reader understand—then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. (Mark 13:14)
From those Scriptures we learn:
1. The ATCD will be set up on a wing of the temple in the holy place. That reveals the location.
2. That act referred to as the abomination, will be the cause of the referred-to desolation.
3. The ATCD will follow the abolishment of the daily sacrifice by 1,290 days.
4. Something will be set up and will be standing in the holy place (which is related to an indirect reference to ATCD).
That indirect reference to the abomination that causes desolation is this one:
Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. (2 Thess. 2:3,4)
The mysterious ATCD is revealed in that passage. It will occur when the antichrist himself proclaims himself in the temple to be God. That will occur 1,290 days after the daily sacrifice is abolished, according to Scripture.
What will be desolated? The answer is Jerusalem:
When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. (Luke 21:20,21)
Before the ATCD can occur there must be a temple. Hence, the building of the temple and the daily sacrifice being done within it are major events to watch for.
Remember: As the days get darker and things get worse on this planet, our glorious Paradise home-going gets closer and closer. Remain faithful to the Lord Jesus. We have exciting and wonderful days awaiting us (1 Cor. 2:9; Rev. 21:4; Phil. 1:20-23; Heb. 3:14; etc.)
GOD BLESS YOU.
